Management of Development Projects

This course will help participants to grasp what is meant by Project Management in development projects, in line with the philosophies of the different donor organizations. International cooperation in development project management requires a common understanding of planning, monitoring and evaluation (PM E).

Concepts such as "PCM – Project Cycle Management" and "Managing for Development Results" are explored. As a fundamental component of the course we examine the Logical Framework Approach as development instrument. One of the major challenges of Project Management is interdisciplinary teamwork. The course helps participants to become familiar with work in interdisciplinary multicultural groups and the application of Project Management instruments and tools.

What does live online training mean?

Our online trainings are not pre-recorded training videos, webinars for large audiences or self-paced e-learning courses. They are virtual live trainings delivered by our trainers in real-time, focusing on the interaction of a small group of remote participants. Just like our face-to-face trainings, these virtual classrooms aim at tailoring the discussions and learning experiences to the training needs of the participants.

Requirements: to attend our live online trainings, a reliable high-speed internet connection and a computer or laptop running Windows or iOS are required (including audio and video). The Humboldt-Universität of Berlin uses the videoconferencing platform Zoom (subject to change) for virtual classrooms as well as other digital tools. We strongly recommend an external headset for better sound quality.

Course Methods

One of the major challenges of Project Management is interdisciplinary teamwork. The course supports participants to become familiar with working in interdisciplinary multicultural groups. The training course fosters learning from experience by giving brief trainer inputs followed by the practice of the use of relevant tools, interactive exercises, discussion and reflection.

The virtual classroom sessions with the trainers and the fellow participants via Zoom (subject to change) are complemented by group exercises, assignments as well as time for self-study and reflection.

Target Group

Professionals in the field of international cooperation and development. A good command of the English language is a prerequisite.

Our short intensive courses promote learning through experience: 'Learning by doing for impact' is the most important aspect of SLE's training philosophy. Our participants come from all around the globe: they include staff from development agencies, national and international NGOs, public institutions, university students and researchers as well as professionals from the private sector. This unique mix of different cultural backgrounds and professions enables a transdisciplinary exchange of experiences within an intercultural learning environment.

All training courses are offered in English and participants are required to have a good command of the language. After having participated actively in the course, you will receive a certificate of attendance issued by SLE and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
